Certification

The ISA Certification program provides recognition of one's professional knowledge by one's peers. As an ISA Certified Arborist with a tested level of knowledge in tree care, you will be promoting yourself and your business. When you tell someone you are an ISA Certified Arborist, they can be confident that you have obtained a standard of knowledge set forth by the industry.

ISA Certified Arborist Exam

Eligibility: Three (3) or more years of full time, eligible, practical work experience in arboriculture or a field related to arboriculture. An Associate's Degree (AA) in arboriculture from a regionally accredited educational institution, and two (2) years of full time, eligible, practical work experience in arboriculture. A Bachelors of Arts or Sciences (BA or BS) degree from a regionally accredited educational institution in the fields of arboriculture, horticulture, landscape architecture, or forestry and one (1) year of full time, eligible, practical work experience in arboriculture or a field related to arboriculture.

Experience: Eligible practical experience will include full-time professional work experience which requires the regular practical use of knowledge involved in arboriculture and tree care, including pruning, fertilization, installation and establishment, diagnosis and treatment of tree problems, cabling and bracing, climbing or other services directly related to arboriculture.

Membership: Membership is not required to take the certification exam. As ISA members provide financial support to the Certification Program through membership fees, members in good standing will be charged lower certification fees. Both members and non-members will be charged certification and exam fees that reflect the appropriate considerations including the cost of providing the exam at the candidate's chosen location.

ISA Certified Arborist/Utility Specialists

Eligibility: The individual must be an ISA Certified Arborist and have a minimum of two years documented and verifiable electric utility vegetation management experience or as a consultant to with utilities a minimum of 4,000 hours in a maximum of a ten year period.

Experience: Eligible practical experience will include full-time professional work experience which requires the regular practical use of knowledge involved in electric utility pruning, vegetation management, electrical knowledge, customer relations and emergency management or other services that directly relate to utility line clearance vegetation management.

Membership: Membership is not required to take the certification exam. As ISA members provide financial support to the Certification Program through membership fees, members in good standing will be charged lower certification fees. Both members and non-members will be charged certification and exam fees that reflect the appropriate considerations including the cost of providing the exam at the candidate's chosen location.

ISA Certified Tree Worker/Climber Specialist

Over 200 individuals are ISA Certified Tree Worker/Climber Specialists in North America

Eligibility: The Individual must have 18 months of climbing experience. The candidate must also show valid proof of training in aerial rescue, CPR and First Aid.

Experience: Practical experience helpful in preparing for the knowledge and skills exam will include full-time professional work that requires the regular practical use of knowledge involved in climbing safety, tree removal, rigging, pruning, cabling, climbing/knots, tree sciences, and tree identification.

Membership: Membership is not required to take the certification exam. As ISA members provide financial support to the Certification Program through membership fees, members in good standing will be charged lower certification fees. Both members and non-members will be charged certification and exam fees that reflect the appropriate considerations including the cost of providing the exam at the candidate's chosen location.

Examination: Structure - The exam is made up of two parts. A 50 question, multiple choice knowledge exam and a skill exam. The individual must pass both to obtain the certification credential. The domains or subjects covered are:
