Mayor Jim Brainard presents Citizens for Greenspace with the 2008 Awards of Excellence for Community Trees - September 15, 2008

Carmel was named the national runner-up in the Small City Category for its Urban Forestry Program. As part of this honor, a grant in the amount of $25,000 was given to Citizens for Greenspace from The Home Depot Foundation. The funds will be used to plant more street trees.

Five national winners were selected by an independent advisory committee comprised of experts in the fields of urban forestry, environmental science and sustainable community development. Carmel was announced the runner-up in the small cities category with a population less than 100,000 at the U.S. Conference of Mayors 76th Annual Meeting in June.

Carmel is committed to improving the quality of life for citizens, and increasing the role trees play to help enhance the community. Carmel's Urban Forestry program has planted 42,685 trees between 1995 and the present, and has been honored with several tree awards: TREE CITY USA for 14 consecutive years and a Tree Growth Award for 12 consecutive years from the National Arbor Day Foundation. Citizens for Greenspace is instrumental in Carmel's Urban Forestry initiatives by assisting in the coordination of the annual Arbor Day celebration and volunteering for tree planting activities throughout the year.

Forestry specialists and arborists work 14-hour days to keep up with sky-high demand in central Indiana

If there's a silver lining to high winds and torrential rain, it can be found in the bank accounts of companies called upon to clean up the mess. For the dozens of tree cutting, trimming and hauling firms that fill up seven pages in the local Yellow Pages, the storms of late spring came at just the right time. (more)
